Scholars such as Hajjime Nakamura will openly admit that the Gotama narrative is highly unlikely to be historical. In essence, it is not that important who historically taught the Buddhist doctrine. I'm not sure why Christianity would require such a dependency. It doesn't change the underlying allegorical theology of the teachings.?
